Brief Description:
The main character of "Shehr-e-Zaat" (English: City of Self) is the attractive daydreamer Falak, the lone child of affluent parents. Falak, a student of fine arts, created a sculpture of the man she imagined having in her life. When she saw Salman as the living embodiment of that sculpture, she fell deeply in love. Falak, however, finds that the more he attempts to get to know Salman, the more he pulls away from her, finally giving in to her demands, but to what end?
The story's central theme is spiritual enlightenment. The Sufi notions of ishq-e-majazi, or the love of a human for another human, and ishq-e-haqeeqi, or the love of a human for God, are contrasted sharply.
The first edition of Shehr-e-Zaat appeared in Khawateen Digest. It was later collected with five other unconnected pieces and published as a book under the title Main Ne Khuwabon Ka Shajar Dekha Hai. Additionally, it was printed in one of the first issues of Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan.
